The Class of 2019 Commits: Field Hockey and Girls’ Lacrosse

Dec. 3 marked one of many signing days at St. John’s, this time for girls’ field hockey and lacrosse. Clara Morrison ’19 signed to play field hockey at Syracuse University, while Emily Bruner ’19, Sabrina Leatherwood ’19, and Ellen Palmiere ’19 signed to play lacrosse at Rhodes College, Old Dominion University, and James Madison University, respectively.
All of the signees credited St. John’s in helping them develop as players and preparing them to play at the next level. Leatherwood credited Coach Corey Kelly for always challenging them in practice and St. John’s for playing some of the top teams in the country, like Bishop Ireton and Good Counsel.
Morrison, Bruner, Leatherwood, and Palmiere all visited their respective colleges throughout high school. Palmiere visited JMU her freshman year and thanked Coach Kelly for encouraging her to visit as many times as possible. Leatherwood first stepped on Old Dominion’s campus following a tournament in the area in the summer. During these visits, both Palmiere and Leatherwood said they felt right at home upon stepping on their new campuses. Palmiere chose JMU was because the campus is beautiful, everyone is welcoming and the coaching staff is very focused on succeeding, both athletically and academically.
Palmiere said she is most excited to play at such a high level. “Although it will be extremely difficult, it’s a great opportunity I have been handed.” Leatherwood echoed that excitement. “I’m excited about playing in the Big East and helping ODU grow as a program into one of the top competitors is college lacrosse.”
These seniors will all miss the friendships they have made through St. John’s athletics and the coaches, but they are excited to play at the college level.
